Irish cyclist Sam Bennett breaks down in tears after historic Tour de France stage victory

EMOTIONS got the best of Sam Bennett during an interview after winning a stage of the Tour de France on Tuesday.

The cyclist made history by becoming just the sixth Irishman ever to win a stage of the world's most famous cycling event.

He pipped Caleb Ewan by one-third of a wheel during a heart-pounding sprint finish at the end of stage 10.

Afterwards, the Carrick-on-Suir man broke down in tears as he described the moment he crossed the line.

"I don't think it's hit me, because I forgot to throw the bike at the line and I thought he might have got me. It hasn't hit me, I thought I'd be in floods of tears but I'm just kind of in shock," Bennett said.

Welling up, he managed to keep his composure for the cameras.

"I just want to thank everyone involved, I just want to thank the whole team, and Patrick for giving me this opportunity, and just everybody it took to get me here.

"I just want to thank my wife, everyone around me, sorry ... sorry I don't mean to be cry-baby.

"You dream of it and never think it’ll happen, then it does. It took a while for it to hit me."

The 29-year-old's victory means he's claimed the green jacket for the second time in the race - which is given to the fastest sprinter at the end of each stage of riding.

Bennett joins Shay Elliot, Stephen Roche, Martin Earley, Sean Kelly and Dan Martin as the latest Irishman claim victory in a Tour de France stage.

Bravo, Sam.
