Irish in Britain: Coleman and Rooney's late winners make the difference

SEAMUS Coleman’s late winner for Everton keep his side’s European hopes alive, while Adam Rooney’s winning penalty helped Aberdeen lift the Scottish League Cup.

PREMIER LEAGUE

Republic of Ireland international Seamus Coleman scored Everton’s late winner against Cardiff City at Goodison Park, securing a 2-1 victory after getting the final touch on Gareth Barry's effort.

David Meyler struck for Hull City against Manchester City, but his effort was ruled out for offside in their 2-0 home defeat.

Stoke City claimed a 3-1 victory over West Ham United creating a nine point gap between themselves and relegation. Corkman Stephen Ireland was strong in possession and impressed in midfield but his finishing lacked confidence.

CHAMPIONSHIP

James McClean was on target twice - equalising for the Latics before sealing the victory with a close-range effort in the 77th minute - as Wigan Athletic defeated fellow playoff hopefuls Ipswich Town 3-1.

Leon Best netted his first league goal for Sheffield Wednesday, scoring his side’s second in their 4-1 win over Birmingham City. Darren Randolph was busy in the away goal, as he disappointingly couldn’t stop the ball from travelling into the net on four occasions.

Irish-eligible Will Buckley scored both of Brighton and Hove Albion's goals as they secured a 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers.

LEAGUE ONE

Notts County returned to the bottom of League One after wasting their early lead and losing 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers. Former Ireland Under-21 international Ronan Murray struck in the 14th minute for the Magpies who appeared to have salvaged a draw with an Alan Sheehan goal, but the visitors struck with six minutes remaining to take all three points.

Brentford defeated Leyton Orient 1-0 securing the second automatic promotion place despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the game, after midfielder Alan McCormack defended off the line to ensure victory for his side.

Mark Connolly put in a strong defensive performance for Crawley Town as they defeated Colchester United 1-0.

LEAGUE TWO

Southend United were held to a scoreless draw by Bury, in a game which saw substitute Barry Corr sent off late on for an off-the-ball push on Frederic Veseli.

Barry Roche did well in the Morecambe goal as they drew 1-1 with Dagenham and Redbridge, moving nine points clear of the relegation zone.

SCOTLAND

Dubliner Adam Rooney scored the winning penalty to help Aberdeen defeat Inverness Caledonian Thistle and lift the Scottish League Cup trophy. The Dons won 4-2 in the penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes.

Anthony Stokes had a goal ruled out for offside early on for Celtic in their 3-0 win at Kilmarnock and later had a penalty appeal turned down.
