Ireland's centurion Fahey signs new deal at Liverpool

Republic of Ireland defender Niamh Fahey has signed a new deal with Liverpool.

The Ireland centurion joined Liverpool in 2018 from Chelsea. Fahey also spent six seasons with Arsenal.

The Galway native has played over 100 times for the Republic of Ireland during her career.

Speaking on the club's website, Fahey expressed her delight in continuing her journey with Liverpool.

“I’m absolutely delighted to have another season in red,” Fahey told the Liverpool website. “I really enjoy my time here with the club, and after a brilliant last season, I’m looking forward to pushing on with the rest of the team.

“It’s special for me to have the Liver bird on my chest. It’s still very surreal because I absolutely love this club. Getting to play in this shirt is something I don’t take for granted, so I’m absolutely delighted to have another year in red.”

Fahey has also confirmed that she plans to go into coaching after her playing career ends. Liverpool coach, Matt Beard has offered her advice, for which she is grateful.

“I’m preparing for a little bit of life after football,” she said. “It’s an exciting time for me as well because I’m at that transition period.

“The offer to do some coaching—Beardy spoke with me—and I’m so grateful for this opportunity to learn from everyone, share my ideas, and understand how things work off the pitch.”

Fahey's contract extension comes in the same week as her Republic of Ireland and Liverpool teammate Leanne Kiernan also agreed to stay at the club.

The talented forward has scored 19 times in 47 games for the famous English club since her debut in 2021.

Her debut season saw her find the back of the net 14 times in 2021; however, the following season was marred by a serious injury in the 2022/2023 season.

Last year, Kiernan returned to the side and scored four goals in a campaign that saw them finish fourth.

The 25-year-old has also played 32 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring four goals in that period.

Speaking on the club's website, Kiernan expressed her fondness for Liverpool and acknowledged the relationship between the city and Ireland.

"It's amazing, for sure. Liverpool is home for me; I'm just really enjoying myself here," said Kiernan on Liverpool's website.

"I love the club; I love the fans; I love the people. We are very similar, the Irish and the Scousers, and I really feel at home here.

"It is massive for my family as well. Obviously, they come over quite often, which is really nice, and it is the closest city to Dublin. They really enjoy coming over, and when I told them I was getting a new contract, they were ecstatic."

Liverpool's final pre-season friendly is against Everton at St Helens Stadium this Sunday, before they host Leicester City to kick off the 2024-25 WSL campaign a week later.
