Ireland legend Paul McGrath among those paying tribute to former Man United boss Alex Ferguson

FORMER Ireland and Manchester United defender Paul McGrath is among those paying tribute to Alex Ferguson, who underwent surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

The former Red Devils boss underwent the emergency procedure yesterday, with the club issuing a statement to say it had gone well.

The 76-year-old is recovering in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital in Manchester.

McGrath, who played under Ferguson between 1986 and 1989, posted a picture of himself with his former boss to Instagram.

Accompanying the picture, McGrath wrote: “Just heard about Sir Alex, my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

"If anyone can pull through this it will be the man himself.”

McGrath wasn't the only Irish person to send their regards. Other former players, rivals and famous fans joined the Black Pearl in sending their support to Ferguson…

Glasgow-born Ferguson is one of the most successful managers in the game.

During his 27 years at Old Trafford, he won 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and the champions League on two occasions.

He also won three Scottish titles with Aberdeen, the last side to win the Scottish top flight outside Celtic and Rangers, as well as four Scottish Cups and the Scottish League Cup.

Ferguson was at Old Trafford last weekend to present rival Arsene Wenger with a gift ahead of the Frenchman’s departure from Arsenal.
