Ireland fans couldn't resist sticking the boot in on Thierry Henry after his Monaco sacking

THIERRY HENRY has been sacked after just three months and 20 games in charge of his former club Monaco - and Irish soccer fans couldn’t be happier.

It’s nearly a decade since the Frenchman made himself public enemy number one on the Emerald Isle after setting up the winner for Les Bleus against Ireland in a crucial 2010 World Cup qualifying playoff with a deliberate handball.

France went on to crash out of the World Cup at the group stage in humiliating style, but Irish fans are still waiting to see their team reach international football’s biggest tournament again.

So, when it was announced that Henry had been sacked by AS Monaco and replaced with Leonardo Jardim, the man he had replaced in the role, Irish fans weren’t about to let it go.

Henry was brought to the Principality Club just three months ago.

A product of the Monaco youth academy, it was hoped that Henry's experience as a coach with the Belgium national side would stand him.

But his tenure in charge of the second-from-bottom Ligue 1 club was nothing short of disastrous.

In 20 games in charge, the Arsenal legend has picked up just five wins along with four draws and 11 defeats.

Worse still, reports suggest Henry regularly fell out with players at the club and had lost the support of the dressing room by the time he left.

An anonymous Monaco source told Goal France: “A few matches ago, he screamed: ‘He, he is supposed to be worth €10m?’All of the substitutes heard.

“The message he sent to the players was very negative.”

Another first-team source added: “He would speak badly to the players, it is a fact.

“He would also make examples of people and that annoyed a lot of people, he gave this haughty impression as if he would not consider anyone else’s opinion.”

Reports of Henry’s departure were greeted with delight from Ireland fans on Twitter who haven’t forgiven or forgotten what happened all those years ago.

It was a source of celebration to some...

While others expressed their feelings in the form of emojis...

A few tried to keep things formal. Well, sort of.

There were mentions of those Renault Clio adverts...

...and his work on Sky Sports.

Most were just happy to see him fail.

Ireland never forgets, Thierry. Good luck back on Sky Sports.
