Hughes wants to 'go out at the top'

CHAMPION flat jockey Richard Hughes is looking forward to starting his training career soon - because the time will be right.

Hughes’ father, Dessie, who passed away last November was one of the most respected National Hunt trainers in Ireland.

Richard Hughes is in his last season as a jockey, and highlighted Mick Kinane and Johnny Murtagh’s greatness in an interview published in this weekend’s Sport Magazine.

“I really admired Kinane, probably the most professional jockey I ever rode against,” Hughes told Sport.

“He was the perfect size and he made fewer mistakes than anyone else.  Murtagh was extremely strong, ultra-competitive and just had great belief in himself.

“It would be great to go out at the top, as they did, but it’s been itching at the back of my mind to go training for a couple of years.  You know you can’t ride forever, but you can train forever.

“That’s why this is the right time to stop riding – my desire to train is growing greater than my need to ride.  When you get to that stage, it is time to make the switch.”
