Greg Norman hints that LIV Golf could come to Ireland

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman has admitted that hosting a LIV Golf event in Ireland in the future could become a reality.

The Saudi-backed league has come under fire for breaking away from traditional tours like the PGA Tour and DP World Tour last year.

Events have already been held in England and Australia, and Ireland's famous Doonbeg Links course in Co. Clare could be used for a LIV event.

Doonbeg Golf Club was purchased by American businessman Donald Trump for an estimated €15M in 2014.

Speaking recently, his son Eric Trump mentioned that talks had been held with Norman.

"They know it is an option and we would love to have them over here," said Trump.

"I think this course is incredibly well-suited for them if they ever choose to come over. We have got a great relationship with them [LIV Golf]. They’re in three of our locations this year, two last year, and many more next year.

"So if that opportunity is right... they move their locations around the world, they want to be in different countries, they want to get maximum exposure and I think that’s again a really good thing for the game of golf."

Today, while speaking to BBC Northern Ireland, Norman added that Ireland is a country that LIV is looking at. "We are looking at 2025-26, '26-'27, and '27-'28 now. So the popularity of this has spoken for itself, and so yes, countries like Ireland are passionate golf countries and a passionate destination not only for Americans but for Europeans to go play there," added the Australian.

"I have built golf courses there, which I am very proud of, so from my perspective, of course, we are going to keep all options open."

LIV Golf's Graeme McDowell also said, "First of all, the market has to want it; the fans have to want it. I think this is a truly global tour, and we can take these events anywhere in the world.

"Would I like to play a LIV event in Ireland? Of course, I would. But I think there are a lot of things that have to happen between now and then."
