GEORDAN MURPHY has announced his retirement from rugby.
The two-time European Cup winner and 74 times capped Ireland player will join the coaching staff at Welford Rd.
Speaking to the Irish Post his brother Ross Murphy said:
“It brings to an end a long and interesting career, but as one door closes, another one opens and while a role hasn’t been fully decided, he will remain in the club in a coaching role. This is something he wanted and the club wanted him to remain on.”
Speaking about his career highlights, Mr Murphy said:
“Obviously winning the two European Cups with Leicester and the 74 times he played for Ireland, picking up a Grand Slam medal along the way. But in addition to that, captaining Leicester for the last three seasons was a huge thing for him. I was with him last weekend and he knew it was going to be his last game. But he’s excited about the future and I know the players are excited.”
Murphy joined Leicester Rugby club from Naas in 1997.
