An Garda Síochána launch Investigation into alleged assault at hurling semi-final

Gardaí Síochánaare investigating an alleged assault that occurred during the All-Ireland Hurling Championship semi-final between Kilkenny and Clare at Croke Park on Sunday.

Following the game, video footage surfaced depicting a confrontation between a male Clare supporter and a group of Kilkenny fans on Hill 16 during the match.

In the incident, a female Kilkenny supporter was spotted in the footage, and another video angle revealed that she sustained a cut above her right eye.

Gardaí confirmed that a teenage girl, who was not connected to the altercation, sustained injuries and received medical attention.

According to a statement, the incident took place on Sunday evening, July 9, 2023, around 5:30 pm at a location in Drumcondra. The Fitzgibbon Street Gardaí are conducting an investigation into the alleged assault.

"Gardaí in Fitzgibbon Street are investigating an incident of alleged assault that occurred at a venue in Drumcondra on Sunday evening, July 9, 2023, at approximately 5:30 pm," said the statement.

"An altercation broke out between two separate persons, and a female teenager (who was not involved in the incident) was injured during the incident. She received medical attention, and her injuries are non-life threatening."

The statement also urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Mountjoy Garda Station. if they had details on the matter.

"Any person who has information in relation to this incident is requested to contact Mountjoy Garda Station on 01-6668600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any other Garda Station," they added.

"Investigations ongoing."

This is the second consecutive weekend where a disturbance among the crowd on Hill 16 has occurred at Croke Park. Last week, fighting broke out among fans during Armagh's All-Ireland football quarter-final defeat to Monaghan.

Kilkenny beat Clare by a margin of two points. They will now face Limerick in the All-Ireland final at Croke Park in a few weeks' time.
