Gardaí caught a motorist who was watching Liverpool vs Barcelona while driving last night

A MOTORIST in Dublin is facing a €1,000 fine after being caught watching Liverpool's Champions League semi-final triumph over Barcelona yesterday evening from behind the wheel.

The man was spotted by a Garda traffic unit on a road in north Dublin last night as he watched the Anfield clash on a phone in a hands-free kit next to his windscreen.

The driver was issued with a Fixed Charge Penalty Notice (FCPN), which could be as high as €1,000 under penalties brought in to discourage phone-usage while driving in 2014.

A Garda tweet read: "Champions League update....Motorist detected by DMR North Roads Policing Unit watching match on mobile phone while driving! Fcpn to be issued. #distracteddriving".

According to RSA guidelines, motorists issued with a FCPN must attend court where their fine is set by a judge.

But the driver probably isn't too bothered if he's a Liverpool fan – after the Reds overturned a three-goal first-leg deficit to book their place in the Champions League final in Madrid with a stunning 4-0 romp of Lionel Messi's Barça.
