Galway great Noel Tierney died at 82

Galway football legend Noel Tierney has died at the age of 82.

The late Tierney won three All-Irelands in a row from 1964 to 1966 for Galway as a fullback.

Before the pre-All-Stars era, the Galway icon won the Texaco/Caltex Footballer of the Year in 1964 at the age of 22.

Before his three-in-a-row All-Ireland wins at senior level, he achieved All-Ireland success with the Galway minors in 1960.

He also won five Connacht Championships and a National League title with Galway in 1965, as well as two Railway Cups with Connacht, including one as captain in 1969.

Tierney’s death comes just a week after an event held in his native Milltown in north Galway to celebrate his achievements for both club and county.

Tierney was predeceased by his son Fergal and is survived by his wife Peggy, son Martin, and daughters Aoife and Mairead.
