GAA: Tribesmen oust Tipperary against the odds

NOT EVEN the goal-scoring exploits of Seamus Callanan could prevent Galway from reaching their first All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final since 2012 on Sunday.

Callanan scored 3-9 himself at Croke Park, but Galway debutant Shane Maloney made the headlines as his last-gasp point handed the Tribesmen a dramatic 0-26 to 3-16 victory.

It means the final will be a repeat of the 2015 Leinster final as Galway have earned another crack at defending champions Kilkenny on September 6, with Brian Cody’s men once again heavy favourites.

For Maloney, it was a memorable first appearance for his county, as he received a long pass from Joe Canning and kept his cool to slot the ball over the bar to put Galway in front in injury-time, ridding the need for a reply.

Kilkenny beat Galway 1-25 to 2-15 in the Leinster final in July, so the Tribesmen will be out for revenge as they bid to lift the Liam McCarthy Cup for the first time since 1988 next month.
