Claddagh Gaels

Claddagh Gaels, Ladies Gaelic Football Club, travelled 15 hours on coach and ferry from Luton to Castlebar, Co Mayo only to be greeted into the town by Taosiseach Enda Kenny and Mayor Noreen Heston.

Local ladies team Carnacon invited The Claddagh Gaels to play in the Aisling McGing tournament where they met a tough senior side, Hollymount who went on to become runners up of the tournament. The score didn’t reflect the hard work the Claddaghs put in but the team were happy to come away with a few scores on the board.

A civic reception was held at Lough Lannagh Holiday Village where the Claddaghs and the Luton Mayo Association were able to present gifts to the Mayo dignitaries including Taoiseach Enda Kenny. One of the gifts was as a traditional Luton straw hat presented by the Luton Mayo Association and worn stylishly by Castlebar Mayor, Noreen Heston.

The footballers played Crawley & Brighton Gaels in Round Two of the football league on Sunday with a final score of TMC 1-15 Crawley & Brighton Gaels 0-2. The team played very well as a whole with Micheal O’Leary, Liam Meirtneach and Phillip Murphy standing out.

The hurlers played Cu Chulainns in a friendly running out worth winners in the end. The hurlers turn their attention to Round One of the British Championship where they will play Fulham Irish in Goodmayes.

This week saw the Ladies team play twice — first on Wednesday evening in a challenge match against Holloway Gaels and then the team’s first championship match took place Saturday morning. The girls were unlucky Wednesday not to come away with a victory but some solid performances and some great practice for the weekend’s fixture. On Saturday morning in Goodmayes, the Ladies won their championship game with determination and despite the heat moved very fast and well around the pitch. The final score was 3-14 — 2-8, and the team go forward in the competition very confident.
