Frank Warren hopes Andy Lee can defend title

PROMOTER Frank Warren expects Andy Lee to fight in the UK if the WBO middleweight champion defeats Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin on April 11.

Several exciting middleweight clashes will be scheduled in the upcoming months with Warren encouraged that so many talented fighters are operating in the division.

Billy Joe Saunders will fight the winner of the Brooklyn brawl involving Lee and Quillin.  “If Andy Lee wins it will be in the UK,” Warren said in London on Thursday afternoon.

“We are talking about a situation similar to the 90s with the middleweights.  He is like the modern day Steve Collins and he adds spice to the situation.  I hope he wins.

“There is an era again developing in the middleweight division which goes back to the glory days of the late 80s and 90s.

“Whatever happens at the end of the day we’ve got some really great fighters.  They are quality young fighters; they are the best around.

“They’ve livened up this division in a big way.  Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Andy Lee wins and that they keep winning,” Warren said regarding Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr, who will both fight on a card at Wembley Arena on May 9.

“To be fair it is a 50-50 fight,” is Saunders’ verdict on the interesting battle between Lee and Quillin.

“Quillin has not really been tested; he has not really been hit on the chin so he hasn’t really been tested.  I’m sure Andy Lee will test him.  Andy Lee has been in some tough fights himself, it is 50-50.”
