REPUBLIC of Ireland have slipped outside of the top 50 national teams following the latest release of the official FIFA world rankings.
To make matters more disheartening, Martin O’Neill’s men have been leapfrogged by Venezuela, a nation who have never before qualified for the World Cup.
It means Ireland drop to number 51, behind the likes of Congo, Iran and Slovenia, and just one place better off than Jamaica.
Northern Ireland are 10 places ahead of the Republic in 41st place, while in-form Wales (9th) have moved ahead of England (10th) for the first time in their history.
Scotland, Ireland’s 2016 European Championships qualifying opponents, are ranked 31.
