FAI pay tribute to late Greek player George Baldock

The FAI has paid tribute to the late Greek defender George Baldock, who tragically passed away this week.The 34-year-old was found dead in a swimming pool in Greece, discovered by his wife, according to reports in Greece.

Police in Greece are now investigating whether another person was involved in his death.

CCTV footage from the entrance to the house is being examined to ensure that nobody else arrived or left the property around the time of his death.

Other reports have stated that there were no signs of forced entry at the house.

Baldock's family released a statement following the devastating news.

"We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss. We ask that the media please respect our privacy at this time," the family said in a statement.

George Baldock played for a number of clubs but is best known for his spell with Sheffield United, where he made over 205 appearances from 2017 to 2024.

Numerous tributes have been paid to the late Greek star, including one from the FAI. Ireland and Greece are set to meet this Sunday in the Nations League.

"We’re incredibly saddened by the news of George Baldock’s passing this evening. George played against Ireland in the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying campaign last year and played with a number of Irish players at club level during his career," said Ireland's football governing body in a social media post.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and also with the players and staff at the Greek Football Federation at this sad time."

Sheffield United also paid tribute, releasing a statement: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff, and teammates who wore the red and white shirt alongside him."

Other Irish stars from the team have also offered their condolences and paid their own tributes to their former teammate. David McGoldrick, John Egan, and Enda Stevens all played with George Baldock while at Sheffield United. McGoldrick also shared a picture on Instagram of the pair together, captioned with a broken heart and dove emoji.

As of now, Ireland’s game with Greece this Sunday is still scheduled to go ahead.
