Egan thanks Sheffield United and others after release from club

Ireland's John Egan has thanked various parties for being part of his journey with Sheffield United after the release of his contract.

The Irish player had previously played for Sunderland, Gillingham, and Brentford before his arrival at Sheffield United in 2018. However, Egan, who was the club captain, has now been released after making 200 appearances for the club.

After a difficult season riddled with injuries, the Cork native missed the majority of the Premier League campaign with an Achilles injury sustained in October. The injury meant that Egan was unable to help Sheffield United avoid relegation to the Championship.

This week, the Irish defender released a goodbye statement detailing the high points of his tenure at Sheffield United.

“It’s hard to put into words how special the last six years at Sheffield United have been for me, my family, and my friends," said Egan on Instagram.

“I have nothing but gratitude and respect for everyone that I have come across at this great football club.

“Two promotions to the Premier League, an FA Cup semi-final, and a top-half finish in the Premier League are just some of the high points that stick out, which we all worked so hard to achieve."

In the same statement, Egan also thanked the fans, the managers he played for, the staff members, the players he played with, and others for being part of his story at Sheffield United.

“Firstly, I’d like to thank the fans. Your unwavering support has been incredible, through all the highs and lows. You are the reason it is such an amazing club to play for.

“To the manager and previous managers, thank you for believing in me and helping me become a better player and person.

“To the staff, thank you for all of your hard work and support behind the scenes.

“To all of my teammates over the last six years, it was an absolute pleasure to spend every day surrounded by top players, but most importantly, top people. The memories we have made will live with me forever.

“I wish you all the best for the future.”
