Dublin hurler Ryan O'Dwyer assaulted in London

DUBLIN hurler Ryan O'Dwyer has been hospitalised in London after being assaulted during a visit to the city at the weekend.

The 29-year-old was in London to attend the Rugby World Cup final, in which New Zealand beat old rivals Australia 34-17 at Twickenham on Saturday.

However, O'Dwyer was unable to attend the match in the end after an incident outside an unnamed London pub forced him to spend the rest of the weekend in hospital.

It is understood O'Dwyer, who is a teacher at Dublin's St MacDara’s Community School in Templeogue, is conscious but may have suffered a broken jaw and a damaged eye socket from the vicious attack.

He has undergone scans on his facial injuries and is expected to find out the full extent of his injuries on Monday. His brother is by his side.

O'Dwyer is a native of Tipperary and was a dual-player for the Premier County before relocating and declaring for Dublin ahead of the 2011 season.

His honours include the 2008 Munster Senior Hurling Championship and National Hurling League title with Tipp while in Dublin colours he has won a National League title (2011) and a Leinster Senior Hurling title (2013).
