Dublin-based punter on the verge of £50k windfall after Leicester and Burnley double

A DUBLIN-BASED punter is waiting on Burnley to secure the Championship title to complete a remarkable 4,000/1 double which would earn him almost £50,000 off a bet.

Clarets fan Sean Keyes, who works for Twitter in the Irish capital having moved from his native Rossendale in Lancashire, has already guaranteed himself around £12,000 after successfully backing Leicester to win the Premier League at 500/1.

The bet was placed six months ago, but Mr Keyes doubled it up under each way terms by backing Burnley to lift the Championship – the second tier of English football – which they will do if they beat Charlton away on Saturday.

“When I looked online, the odds for Leicester to win the Barclays Premier League outright were 500/1, while the odds for Burnley to win the Championship were 8/1 so I stuck a ten euro bet on each way,” said Sean, whose parents are from Fivemiletown in Tyrone.

“I’m a Burnley fan and Leicester got promoted with us a couple of seasons ago so I thought why not? I felt people had been underestimating Leicester after such a good start to the season. Being a Burnley fan I had faith in Sean Dyche, the manager, and the team.

“I’ve got the €15,000 from Leicester winning the league and the rest of it all comes down to Saturday. If Burnley beat Charlton then I will get the other €45,000. I don’t think I will have any fingernails left by the end of Saturday’s game!”

A draw or even defeat may even be enough for Burnley, who lead Middlesbrough and Brighton by two points at the top of the table ahead of the final round of games for the regular Championship season.

Ironically, Boro host Brighton at the same time on Saturday afternoon, and both sides will be going all out for a win as a draw will hand Burnley the title no matter the outcome at The Valley.
