Derry triathlete impresses in London

DERRY triathlete Aileen Reid is now ranked sixth in the world, following her fourth place finish in the London World Triathlon Series.

Reid placed 17th in the 750m swim, meaning that she chased the leaders from the back of the pack for the 20km cycling leg through the Hyde Park course over the weekend.

The final 5km run awarded Reid the opportunity to further close the gap on the race leaders, and she recorded the second fastest time of 56.25s to finish just outside the podium positions in fourth place.

She said: "I'm really pleased, it's finally coming together for me. It's half the distance (Sprint) but it's twice as hard.

"Unfortunately I missed that front pack after the swim but I had a really great run, I didn't think I was going to run that fast," she added.
"I really feel like I want to be in the top ten in the world and these last three performances are what I've really been pushing for."

USA dominated the podium with Gwen Jorgenson securing her tenth World Series win.

Reid will now focus on the Baku European Games on June 13, with the winner facing automatic Rio 2016 Olympic qualification.

In the men’s race Cork native Bryan Keane finished 36th in a time of 52:05s.
