Hallgrímsson, Cullen, and the Ireland squad will link up for the Nations League game against England on September 7. This will give Hallgrímsson a chance to assess some of Ireland's players.
A new manager brings lots of questions, and one man who knows him well is Gudmundsson, a teammate of Cullen's. The pair spent time together when they both competed in Euro 2016, where Iceland's most famous win came against England in that tournament.
Cullen has revealed that he has been speaking to his Burnley teammate about the new Ireland boss.
“I’ve spoken to Johann about him, and I’ve only heard good things—positive things about how he is as a coach and a person," said Cullen this week.
“Before you know it, the international window is coming up thick and fast, so it won’t be long before we’re all meeting up for the England game to kick off that Nations League campaign.

“It’s a great game to look forward to. I know the Aviva (Stadium) will be bouncing.
“The atmosphere will be incredible for that game.
“To test ourselves against one of the best teams in the world is going to be a good chance to see where we’re at.
“We’ve got a good young squad of up-and-coming players, and we’ll be working our best to get a result in front of our fans.”
Ireland will begin their campaign on September 7 against England in a League B, Group B2 match. Following this, on September 10, they will take on Greece. The team will then travel to Finland for their next fixture on October 10. Just three days later, on October 13, Ireland will face Greece again, this time away.
Their penultimate match will be on November 14, when they host Finland. Finally, Ireland will conclude their group stage on November 17 with a match against England.
