Coleman PFA selection is first for Irish in almost five years

SEAMUS COLEMAN is the first Irishman to have been included in the Professional Footballers' Association's (PFA) Premier League team of the year, since Aston Villa’s Richard Dunne was selected four years ago.

The 25-year-old Ireland international has impressed for Everton in the top flight this season, helping the club into fifth position and closely chasing a Champions League spot, with two fixtures remaining.

The right-back was honoured at London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Sunday night, being selected for the 2013/14 best XI alongside Liverpool’s Luis Suarez, who received the PFA Player of the Year Award.

Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard also made the cut for the league leaders, with Yaya Toure, Adam Lallana, Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, Gary Cahill, Luke Shaw and Petr Cech also being selected.

Prior to Dunne’s inclusion in the best XI in 2010, Irish goalkeeper Shay Given made the PFA's Premier League team in 2006 whilst playing for Newcastle United.
