Clones Cyclone Barry McGuigan being taken to court by Carl Frampton

TWO legendary boxers are heading for a courtroom showdown.

Carl Frampton has lodged a High Court writ against his former manager Barry McGuigan in a dispute over earnings.

The writ is against McGuigan, his wife Sandra and their company Cyclone Promotions (UK) Ltd.

Former two-weight world champion Frampton split from Cyclone Promotions last summer, having been managed by McGuigan since turning professional in 2009.

He was also trained by McGuigan’s son Shane.

Frampton’s writ is a counter-claim after proceedings were brought against him by Cyclone Promotions in November over an alleged breach of contract.

That case is being dealt with at the High Court in London.

Frampton’s counter-claim, filed at the High Court in Northern Ireland, is connected to money made from fights in Northern Ireland, Britain and the United States.

A preliminary hearing in Belfast on Friday, to decide the proper jurisdiction for the boxer's claim, was adjourned.

Arguments will be heard later this month on whether the case should be heard in Belfast or London.

Last September, Frampton signed a promotional deal with Frank Warren and an advisory deal with MTK Global.

In February 2016, Frampton defeated Scott Quigg to win the WBA (Super) super-bantamweight title and retain his IBF super-bantamweight title.

Just five months later he became the first boxer from Northern Ireland to hold world titles in two weight classes when he beat Leo Santa Cruz for the WBA (Super) featherweight title.

In 1985, McGuigan famously defeated Eusebio Pedroza in London to become the WBA world featherweight champion.
