Clare's O'Donnell wonders why it took so long for Clare to reach another final.

Clare's Shane O'Donnell has wondered why it took so long for Clare to reach another final after their 2013 success.

Cork and Clare will battle it out for Liam McCarthy's success later today. The two sides last met in the All-Ireland final back in 2013, where, ironically, both sides met on this very day.

The banner came out on top thanks to a younger Shane O'Donnell's hat-trick that day, and Clare will hope for similar scenes later today.

It's been a long time since Clare reached the All-Ireland final, with near misses in semi-finals along the way.

O'Donnell, one of Clare's best players this year, has questioned why Clare has failed to reach another final since 2013.

"I certainly wouldn't have thought it'd be 11 years between the two All-Irelands," the Clare star told RTÉ Sport this week.

"Especially after that year (2013). That year was a bit of a whirlwind, and I wasn't necessarily always on the starting team.

"So you don't experience it in the same way that I experience it now, where you're in the middle of it all the time and in every game.

"It's... strange, to be honest, that it's been 11 years since we've been there.

"All the games feel quite similar, but then when you get into the All-Ireland final, there's just so much more hype and attention and all that great stuff that comes with it."

Back in 2013, O'Donnell recorded one of the most famous hat-tricks in living memory inside the first 20 minutes and helped Clare to their first All-Ireland title since 1997.

Reflecting on those moments, the Clare star believes he remembers very little about the hat trick but admits he will give it his all this evening.

"It's certainly very different, and I'd kind of forgotten what that's like. So, I've just been enjoying it," he added.

"I wouldn't read too much into it (2013 replay). A lot of things went my way, and I was very fortunate that day. I've played Cork a lot of times since, and they've not gone that way. It's going to be an extremely difficult battle.

"Certainly wouldn't be waiting for a day like that to happen again. I'm just going to have to go out and do my best and see what happens essentially."

Cork will play Clare in the All-Ireland SHC final at 3:30 PM at Croke Park.

You can watch the game on RTÉ2, with build-up from 2:15 PM, while coverage on BBC Two NI starts at 3 PM.
