Ireland's Cathal Heffernan has signed for Newcastle United after completing a successful trial with the club.
The Irish centre-back has represented the Republic of Ireland from under-15 to under-18 levels and is the son of former Irish Olympian walker Rob Heffernan.
The former Cork City youth player signs from Italian giants AC Milan.
The Ireland underage star described the experience of signing for the high-flying Premier League side as 'surreal'. Heffernan also gave a special mention to the locals in Newcastle.
"It's surreal to join such a big club like Newcastle. It's definitely a club that is on the rise and with a lot of history. During the last week, I've been so excited to get started and I'm now looking forward to a big season ahead," he said on the club's website.Â
"The first thing I noticed when I arrived on trial was that the lads were really welcoming, and I just want to carry that on into the season, getting to know them more. The people of Newcastle are also really nice, too."
The Cork native also admitted that he has become a better defender because of his time in Italy. He now has the goal of breaking into the first team under Eddie Howe.

Welcome, Cathal!— Newcastle United FC (@NUFC) August 24, 2023
"I have become a much better defender during my time at AC Milan, and I learned so many things to improve my game during my two seasons in Italy, which should stand me in good stead for the future.
"The goal when playing Academy football is to try and break into the first team as quickly as you can, and hopefully, I can do that at Newcastle United."
Hefferan is not the only Irish player to sign for the club. Newcastle have also signed goalkeeper Reece Byrne from League of Ireland Premier Division side Bohemians.
The 18-year-old shot-stopper, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at under-19 level, also added on the club's website: "It's unreal to sign for Newcastle United and a real dream come true. I've always had a ball at my feet growing up, and it's always been a big part of my family.
"The heritage of the football club was a big factor in my decision to sign. There's a lot of history here, the fan base is unbelievable, and I think it looks like a great place to be."
Hefferan and Byrne's new club Newcastle will play against Liverpool in their next Premier League game. That kicks off at 4pm and can be seen on Sky Sports.
