Carsley admits he did talk to FAI 'informally'

England's interim boss, Lee Carsley, has confirmed that he did indeed speak to the FAI about replacing Stephen Kenny earlier this year.

Former Ireland midfielder Carsley was one of the names hotly tipped to replace Kenny after his sacking last November, but the move never materialised in the end.

Instead, the Birmingham native decided to climb the ladder at the English FA and took over from Gareth Southgate, who also stepped down from his role with the England senior team after the Euros.

This week, England and Ireland lock horns in Dublin in the opening game of the Nations League, and Carsley will manage the England team for now, at least.

Ahead of the game, Carsley was asked about the talks with Ireland and confirmed that the speculation about the taking Ireland gig was indeed true. However, he added that he wasn't offered the job but mentioned that the chat was an informal conversation between two parties.

“First of all, it was quite an informal conversation. It wasn’t that I was offered the job or wanted the job or turned the job down or anything like that," said the 40-capped Ireland midfielder to the Irish Mirror

“It was far from that. It was quite an informal conversation. It was after the Under-21 Euros, and so it was at a point where, similar to anyone who wants a meeting or a catch-up, I try to be as accommodating as I can.

Carsley added that despite not being keen on taking the role, he did so out of respect and manners for the FAI.

“At the start of my career, someone’s advice was that if someone wants to meet you, make sure you go and meet them and pay them that respect.

“So I was really aware going into the conversation that I’ve got a really good job and I’m supported where I am.

“So it went no further, and it was literally quite an informal conversation. A quick coffee, and that was it.”

Ireland will begin their campaign on September 7 against England in a League B, Group B2 match. Following this, on September 10, they will take on Greece. The team will then travel to Finland for their next fixture on October 10. Just three days later, on October 13, Ireland will face Greece again, this time away.

Their penultimate match will be on November 14, when they host Finland. Finally, Ireland will conclude their group stage on November 17 with a match against England.
