Ireland's Gavin Bazunu has stated that he and other young players from Ireland must step up and be counted ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifying game against Greece on Friday.
The Boys in Green face slim chances of making it to the Euro finals in Germany after consecutive losses against France and the Netherlands in September shattered their hopes. While there is still a mathematical possibility, it is highly unlikely due to several factors.
Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny has introduced several young talents, including Bazunu, Jason Knight, Nathan Collins, Evan Ferguson, and others, since taking charge in 2020. Despite discussions about the need for the young squad to grow, Bazunu believes it is time for them to start winning games.
"We have a great squad," Bazunu commented this week. "We've been labelled as 'young players with potential,' but it's time for us to step up as a group, establish a strong squad culture, deliver top-notch performances, and secure results."
The Irish keeper also acknowledged the absence of senior players in the current squad, emphasising that many younger players have significant international and club level experience.
"I think it’s been mentioned in the group that we have a lot of the senior players who are not in the squad so it’s time for a lot of the younger lads, you know we call them young lads, but a lot of us have a lot of experience playing at international and club level, so it’s time for us to step up and take that role," he added.
"I've learned to block out the noise around my performance and only listen to people who can enhance my game," Bazunu said. "Goalkeepers, especially, face intense scrutiny at the top level. I focus on individuals who I know will help me improve."
Bazunu, who has faced criticism for his club performances with Southapton, remains focused on improving his game and filters feedback to block out negativity. He acknowledged the challenge of dealing with social media criticism and emphasised the importance of mental strength
"It can be difficult due to the reach of social media these days. Sometimes it’s impossible to stay away from it. You don’t want to completely shut it out because then you don't learn to cope with it. Young players need to work not only on their technique and tactics but also on the mental side of the game, which is crucial for consistent high-level performance."
