Bamford: 'I'm not going to rule out either option'

Promising youngster Patrick Bamford hasn't ruled out the prospect of playing at senior international level for the Republic of Ireland.

Bamford, on loan at promotion chasing Middlesbrough from Chelsea, was named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year on Sunday evening.

In 2010 Bamford played at youth level for Ireland, but has since featured in the under 21 grade for England.

"My mum's side is Irish and my dad's side is English so it was a tough decision for me. Being English, it was always my dream to play for England, but I'm not going to rule out either option,” Bamford said in a radio interview with Talksport.

Having netted 17 goals in Boro’s campaign Bamford hopes to be involved at first team level with Chelsea in the future.

“Ever since I signed for Chelsea, It has been my dream (to play for them).  But it is a bridge I will cross when I go back to Chelsea in the summer. Depending on what happens at ‘Boro, it will be a discussion we have when the season is done and dusted.”
