Anthony Moyles: 'I’ve never had as little interest in the GAA inter-county season as this year'

Former Meath coach and player Anthony Moyles has claimed that he has never been as disinterested in Gaelic football as he is this year.

Gaelic football has been criticised by a number of fans and former players for how slow and boring games have become over the years. The issue of low attendance at games has also arisen as a result.

Many avid GAA lovers have become dissatisfied with how the game is evolving and how some teams play it. To help correct the issue, the GAA has changed the format of the championship and also aims to bring in new rules to enhance it.

Nevertheless, Moyles claims he, like many others, doesn't have the same hunger and love that he once did for his beloved sport.

"I’ve never had as little interest in the GAA inter-county season as this year. Maybe it’s because life is busy, but then I find that’s just an excuse, and the more I talk to people, they say the exact same. The constant changing of the championship format and the fact that it is real," he said on X.

Moyles also made a series of other tweets highlighting how fans of the game aren't as passionate as they once were. He also states that the GAA superiors should wake up before it's too late for the game that so many love in Ireland.

"The elephant in the room has not yet been tackled (provincials), which means that people are overwhelmed with games in a concentrated period. Of course, rather than grasping the major nettle, the GAA will push the championship finales back to as late as possible, thereby ending the split season for the club player and putting the final nail in the coffin of the game at grassroots level! The apathy being shown to games and teams by GAA supporters is enormous.

"Take, for example, Meath fans. I checked in on the usual “forums” today, and people are not even angry anymore. They don’t care! Maybe that is just a myth at present because the current setup is so off, but when you see 14K at a Dublin championship game in Croke Park, it tells an even more important story. The powers that be better wake up before it’s too late and start making some real hard decisions, or the trajectory is only going to continue one way!!"

Meath plays Kerry on Sunday at 2pm.
