Adam Idah eyes treble after scoring brace to seal title for Celtic

IRISH striker Adam Idah has said Celtic are ready to fight to win the Scottish Cup and seal and ninth treble for the club.

The Co. Cork native was speaking after his second-half brace from the substitutes' bench helped the Hoops to a 5-0 win over Dundee United to seal a fourth consecutive title.

Victory over Aberdeen in the cup would represent a fifth trophy in Celtic colours for Idah since arriving in February 2024.

While he says he will relish this latest success, he revealed none of their players would be resting on their laurels with a treble on the line.

"It's amazing, it's some feeling," he told Celtic TV after the victory at Tannadice that secured a 13th title in 14 seasons.

"I was just speaking to Kasper [Schmeichel] there, it's a feeling that you don't forget and you've got to remember these days.

"It's one of the reasons why everyone comes to Celtic, you want to win titles and you want to win as many games as you can and for me personally to top it off with two goals is amazing, so it's a great day overall.

"I was a bit iffy when I first came on, it was a bit of an unexpected substitution but you have to be ready and I'm happy that I scored the two goals.

"It's a brilliant day overall, you can see with all the fans, it's an amazing day out.

"It was a bit unfortunate that we couldn't do it at home but look, it's unbelievable.

"You've got to remember these days and obviously celebrate tonight but you've still got to work hard.

"As I said, Celtic is about winning trophies and we've still got one more trophy that we want to try and win and that's what we're trying to fight for."

'Break down the barriers that create division'

Celtic looked in control early on but it was an own goal from Ryan Strain, under pressure from Jota, that opened the scoring after half-an-hour.

After that, as with last week's game at St Johnstone, the floodgates opened and the Hoops added two more before the break through Nicolas Kühn.

The strikes were the German's first goals in over two months, his form having dipped somewhat since the turn of the year after scoring 14 goals in his first 25 games of the season.

His brace reminded the Celtic fans of what he is capable of and Idah — who replaced the injured Jota after 35 minutes at Tannadice — has been doing likewise after some arguably unfair criticism this season.

While he has had some barren spells, including a run of 14 games without a goal either side of Christmas, the Irishman has still weighed in with an impressive 17 goals.

That's a far from insignificant return, especially when competing up front this season with the likes Daizen Maeda (33), Kühn (20) and the now-departed Kyogo Furuhashi (12).

Idah will also be hoping to keep up his knack of scoring in trophy-winning games with the Scottish Cup Final meeting with Aberdeen on the horizon.

As well as his brace on Saturday, he opened the scoring in a 5-0 win over Kilmarnock in May 2024 in the game that sealed last season's title.

Ten days later, it was the Irishman's late strike that sealed a 1-0 victory over Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final.

Idah also converted his penalty in the shootout over Rangers in the League Cup Final earlier this season after the sides finished 3-3 after extra time.

'Break down the barriers that create division'

As Idah has come in for some unfair scrutiny, so to has the Celtic squad, having recently lost three out of five league games after losing only one of the previous 36.

Manager Brendan Rodgers suggested this week that his players were perhaps the victims of their own success, saying people looking in 'maybe underestimate the difficulties in meeting the high expectations'.

Rodgers himself questioned the team's mentality after their last defeat away to bottom club St Johnstone but he was full of praise for his side after Saturday's win.

"It's a great performance, the team overall have turned up when they've needed to turn up, they've looked to win every game," he told Celtic TV.

"Sometimes we haven't but in the main, the consistency, the mentality but also the level of football that we've played, it's truly been a brilliant season in the league."

The manager also praised his captain Callum McGregor, who echoed his manager's words this week when he said Celtic's success has 'desensitised everyone to how actually difficult it is'.

"People wouldn't understand how difficult it is to captain a club like Celtic, it really is a 24/7 job," added Rodgers.

"The pressure that's on you off the pitch, the pressure to perform on the pitch to lead a team — one of the world's great clubs — and he just does it in a way that I'm so proud to see.

"As a manager, it's very important to have a captain that can relay your messages into the changing room and knows the standards which we set here.

"He lives them every single day of his life and I am so happy for him getting his rewards.

"He leads the team as good as any captain I've ever been with and as I say, actually then performs to such a high level all season."

Celtic have four more league games — beginning with a trip to Rangers next Sunday — before the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Saturday, May 24.
