Haughey home set for a leisure and tourism revival

The Dublin home of former Taoiseach Charles Haughey could be turned into a tourism and leisure facility under plans revealed by its new owners.

Located in Kinsealy, the 18th century building was bought by Japanese hotel chain Toyoko Inn for €5.5 million in 2013.

The company have since made an application to Fingal County Council for permission to restore a number of outbuildings that have gone into disrepair on the 250-acre estate.

They also plan to refurbish the main house - which is regarded as one of architect James Gandon’s finest creations and one of major architectural importance.

The stately home and its outbuildings had fallen into disrepair since Mr Haughey’s widow, Maureen Haughey moved out in 2008, having lived there for almost 40 years.

An accumulation of legal and tax bills accrued by the late Taoiseach, who died in 2006, forced the fmaily to sell the luxury property.
