A cottage at the Meeting of the Waters

Aherlow
The Meetings
Avoca, Co. Wicklow
Four bedroom extended cottage
€285,000

A unique property set on 1.4 acres in one of Ireland’s most scenic locations is up for sale. Aherlow is located in the Vale of Avoca at the Meeting of the Waters not far from where 1990s TV series Ballykissangel was filmed. The house is a former forester's cottage that has been lovingly cared for and recently extended while retaining its original country character.

“The old and the new blend seamlessly into one,”current owner Susan Sheridan says. “The living room has been doubled in size with large picture windows to take full advantage of the beautiful views all around the house.” Inside the property there are four bedrooms. The house has a newly-added large sun room/breakfast room, which opens into a bright newly fitted kitchen. A new roof has also been added and cream grain-finish double glazed windows have been installed throughout the property. The large garden (1.4 acres) is easy to maintain with banks of mature shrubs and deciduous trees surrounding the property.  A large detached garage (23'0" x 16'0") can be used as a workshop or storage area, and there is ample parking.

“It’s quiet and totally private,” Susan says. “There are two private entrances with wooden gates at different levels of the garden and little pathways allow you to meander around the garden.” She added: “The house is a sun trap from morning until night and the hills immediately behind the house provide protection from the northerly winds. Both house and garden give a sense of space, beauty and calm.”

The area itself is famed not only for its natural beauty where two rivers meet, but it is renowned as the place where Thomas Moore wrote his poem The Meeting of the Waters. For foodies, traditional music and all-day food is available nearby at The Meetings Pub - a couple of minutes’ walk away. And Ireland's oldest hotel The Woodenbridge Hotel is just ten minutes’ away, with a cosy old-fashioned feel it’s the perfect spot for Sunday lunch.
The area has an abundance of activities and places to visit nearby. From trout fishing to kayacking and GAA to rugby clubs, there’s plenty on offer.

There are also many beautiful river walks, especially the nearby Avondale House and Forest Park - the former home of Charles Stewart Parnell. The Woodenbridge Golf Club is nearby too, as is Brittas Bay with its famous sandy beach. A world away from the hustle and bustle, Aherlow is only 45 minutes from Dun Laoghaire and one hour by train to Dublin. A bus to Dublin Airport passes by the house twice per day, while a school bus also passes by the gate.

The current owners, Kevin and Susan Sheridan, have decided to sell the property themselves. “We all know that this is a difficult time for sellers and for buyers,” they said. “We hope that by direct contact with us, potential buyers will feel confident and secure. We also believe that they will benefit from our first-hand knowledge and experience of both the house and the surrounding area.”
