Luas website under attack from hackers demanding ransom from Dublin tram operator

THE WEBSITE of Dublin’s tram service has gone offline after a message was posted claiming it had been hacked and demanding a ransom.

The Luas website was hacked overnight, with a team of engineers currently working to fix the problem.

Users trying to access luas.ie were presented with a message threatening to "publish all data and send emails to your users" unless "1 bitcoin" was paid in the next five days.

At the time of writing, one bitcoin is valued at €3,385.

The hacker claims to have emailed the company several days ago, revealing that there were several security holes in their site but received no reply.

Luas has already taken to Twitter to explain that technicians working on the issue and that travel updates will be made on its Twitter account for the time being.

The company has yet to confirm the website has been hacked though, with a spokesperson explaining the site is a relatively static one with little interaction with customers.

More importantly, the Luas service has not been affected by the incident.
