Hundreds of Irish men taking dip in the sea wearing only a dickie-bow for charity

AROUND FIVE-HUNDRED Irish men are planning to jump in the sea wearing nothing but a dickie-bow, in an attempt to raise money for charity.

The soon-to-be all but nude gentlemen are hoping to raise €50,000 to help fight male cancer, in a naked stunt called 'The Dickie Dip'.

They'll be jettisoning their clothes on a private beach in Skerries, Dublin for the event, joining forces with the Mater Foundation.

It will be in aid of male-related cancer care in the Mater Public Hospital and funds raised will go toward state-of-the-art surgical equipment at the facility.

Taking part is Dermot Higgins, a retired teacher from Rush, who's made the news before. Dermot became the oldest man to cycle around the world, but now has his sights set on raising money and awareness for a disease which claimed the life of his father at the age of 62.

Speaking to the Dublin Gazette, Dermot said: "He was the person who introduced me to the joys of sea swimming.

"His life was cut short - we could have had so many more years enjoying the great outdoors together.

"With prostate cancer, there are often no obvious symptoms.

"I hope that by raising €50,000 through the Dickie Dip we will go some way to ensuring that many more men can live longer and and more fulfilling lives."

The Dickie Dip will be held on November 9 at 1pm on a private beach in the seaside town - and the location will only be revealed to registered participants.
