A 27-YEAR-OLD woman was found dead in a churchyard in Co. Dublin after a long period of time spent sleeping rough.
The woman was sleeping in St Michan’s Church in the city centre before her untimely death.
She was found dead by members of the public who alerted an Garda Síochána before she was pronounced as dead.
Speaking to Dublin Live, Reverend Pierpoint of the church where the deceased was found said his thoughts are with her grieving family: "I am deeply saddened and shocked by the sad and tragic death of a young woman in the early hours of this morning. My thoughts and prayers and those of our entire parish community are with this young woman’s family...
I am conscious the graveyard at the back of St Michan’s has been used as a relatively safe haven for some of our city’s homeless people, however, unfortunately, it has also been the place where drug addicts congregate."
He said serious provisions needed to be put in place for Irish homeless people: "In today’s society when so much is being spoken about homelessness it would appear that yet again, talk has not turned into action.
"The needless and senseless death of this young woman is a tragedy which cannot be ignored and every assistance by local and national authorities must be given to support people who find themselves in difficult circumstances."
