A NINE-YEAR-OLD English bulldog by the name of Zsa Zsa has been crowned the winner of the 2018 World's Ugliest Dog contest.
First set up back in the 1970s, the event is a celebration of canine imperfect, with plenty of hairless bodies and lolling tongues on display.
Zsa Zsa beat off some pretty stiff competition to claim the crown which comes with a $1,500 cash price for her owner, Megan Brainard of Minnesota in the US.
The prized English bulldog will also star in a series of promotional appearances where Zsa Zsa's squishy face, long tongue, and habit for drooling will make him an endearing presence.
As part of the contest, all competing dogs were tasked with walking down a red carpet while a panel of judges evaluated their looks and general star quality.
Held over in sunny California, the event even featured an appearance from 2017's winner.
Martha, a 57-kilo Neapolitan Mastiff, took the top prize with her gentle nature, droopy face, and penchant for passing wind and inopportune moments.
Zsa Zsa came through a pretty competitive field to claim the top prize this time around.
Other contenders included Himisaboo, a Chinese crested and dachshund mix that's hairless except on his head, tail, and toes.
Then there was Wild Thang, a Pekingese who contracted distemper when she was just 10 weeks old and now has limited movement in her tongue and jaw.
One of her front legs also paddles constantly. Even when she is sleeping.
Perhaps the biggest challenge came from hairless Chihuahua Rascal Deux, who distinctive tuft of white hair and different coloured eyes made him a stand-out.
A winner of several ugliest dog competitions down the years, on this occasion he had to settle for second place.
