Woman's foot amputated after DART fall

A WOMAN has had her right foot amputated after falling under a DART train in Dublin on Sunday night.

The 30-year-old was part of a group, believed to be returning from a Christening, that had left one of the carriages.

The incident happened just as the Greystones to Howth train she got off was pulling out of Tara Street station.

The driver, unaware the woman had fallen, closed the doors and continued on his journey to the next stop at Connolly Station.

There is no suggestion that foul play or alcohol played a factor.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the woman, believed to be from Palmerstown, was rushed to St James's Hospital.

However one of her legs was so badly injured that it had to be amputated below the knee.

Gardaí have launched an investigation and are now closely examining CCTV to see how the tragedy occurred.

It is believed they are treating it as a tragic accident.

Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny also described the incident as a "tragic, if not freak, accident".
