A 28-YEAR-OLD woman has been given a suspended sentence of 2½ years following a claim she made about being raped 4 years ago.
The court heard Killorglin woman Jacinta O'Connor was on a night out after County Kerry had won the All-Ireland senior football final.
Miss O'Connor had reportedly been separated from the group she was out with and later that night, at 4 am, appeared at Killarney Garda station to make a statement about her rape.
Miss O'Connor told Gardaí at the station that she was raped by a non-Irish national dressed in a green hoodie.
Following tracking of CCTV footage, Gardaí found a man matching this description and took clothing and possessions from him.
However, according to Irish Times, footage showed Miss O'Connor leaving the club with a different man to walk down an alleyway with him. This man told the court he and Miss O'Connor had gone to a carpark to have consensual sex.
Miss O'Connor was found guilty in 2016 and was sentenced by Judge O’Donnell to 30 months imprisonment which would be suspended for 2 and a half years on the condition the accused stay out of trouble and keep the peace.
