A WOMAN has become the second person arrested in connection with the death of a child in County Tyrone.
The 24-year-old woman was arrested today on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, child cruelty, and causing or permitting the death of a child, The Journal reports.
The arrest comes days after a 32-year-old man was arrested at the house where the two-year-old girl, named locally as Ali Jayden Maguire, was found with serious head injuries on Friday.
The Northern Ireland ambulance service was called to an address in Park Avenue, Dungannon, and the child was rushed to hospital by paramedics but later died from her injuries.
The man is still being questioned by police on suspicion of murder, and PSNI detectives were today granted a court extension to hold the man for questioning for a further 36 hours.
The toddler, known as AJ, is being mourned in the community, with members of the public leaving flowers and messages of sympathy outside the house where she sustained the fatal injuries.
A post-mortem is due to be carried out in the coming days to determine the cause of death.
Her family is being supported by family liaison officers from the PSNI.
Investigations continue.
