Widow accused of killing Irish father in US stood to inherit his $600,000 life insurance payout, court hears

THE WIDOW of Jason Corbett who is on trial accused of his murder stood to inherit $600,000 from his life insurance payout, a court has heard. 

Molly Martens Corbett, 33, and her father Thomas Martens, 67, are currently on trial in North Carolina accused of killing Jason Corbett.

They have both pleaded not guilty.

Limerick native and father-of-two Jason Corbett, 39, was found dead at his home in Lexington, North Carolina on August 2, 2015.

On Friday August 4, retired FBI agent and murder co-accused Thomas Martens took to the stand at the court. Molly Martens Corbett waived her right to testify.

Thomas Martens was questioned by the prosecution in relation to an life insurance policy set up through Mr Corbett's work, for which Molly Martens-Corbett is the sole beneficiary.

When questioned by the prosecution he confimred he was aware his daughter was a beneficiary of the life insurance policy but said he was not aware the payout of the policy was $600,000.

Assistant District Attorney Greg Brown then asked him: “Is it true that you and your daughter bludgeoned and murdered a naked and unarmed man on the floor?”

Mr Martens replied: “That is not the truth.”

The defence return to court today for final submissions to the jury having begun their closing statements yesterday.

They insist both accused acted in self- defence.
