'Well known' Irish footballer arrested after gardai intercept €3 million shipment of heroin

AN IRISH former professional footballer has been arrested after gardai recovered a shipment of heroin worth around €3 million in Dublin.

Two men, aged 31 and 41 were arrested in relation to the bust, but their identities haven't been revealed.

However, according to the Irish Independent, the younger suspect is a former Irish professional footballer who has played both in England and in domestic leagues here.

The seizure was made in coordination with a number of international agencies. In total, 22kg of suspected heroin was recovered with an estimated street value of €3m.

The suspects are currently being held at Blanchardstown garda station under drug-trafficking legislation and can be held for up to seven days.

Det Chief Supt Angela Willis, head of the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (DOCB ), said of the seizure: "The outcome of cooperation between Revenue and Customs and An Garda Síochána, has resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of heroin from circulation within communities that are suffering the consequences of drug trafficking".

He added that "collaboration between both agencies, as well as international colleagues, was significant in the successful outcome of this operation."
