Watch video from the Mothers of Modern Ireland archive

IT’S BEEN an epic journey but the long-awaited Mothers of Modern Ireland film archive is now live and available at the click of a mouse.

After five years in the making the docu-film which captures the life story of 32 Irish women – one from each Irish county – was launched over the weekend.

“It feels great to get to the launch date,” director Shane Dempsey said as the online archive went live on Sunday, Mother’s Day.

He added: “Our journey, which started as a lovely little idea of the three of us interviewing our own grandmothers and thinking this would make a good website, became mush more than we had imagined.”

The Fragments Theatre production is a joint effort between Mr Dempsey, filmmaker Thomas Flannery and writer Hannah Burke.

“This is five years in the making, so over the past few weeks we have been reconnecting with some of the women. That was really interesting as their lives have changed, things have moved on and our lives have changes too,” Dempsey said.

“But when you go back to reconnect with those stories you really see that what we did was epic. Nobody has ever done it before so it’s amazing to finally be able to share it and get feedback. The sense that we can say it’s out there let the ball roll, that’s very exciting for us.”

The team plan to continue the project and are currently engaging with ‘project patrons’ to make a donation and help edit footage for their county.

They still need patrons for 17 of the 32 counties. If you are interested contact [email protected] or see the archive at www.mothersofmodernireland.com.
