Video of dog performing traditional Irish dance for St Patrick's Day sends social media into meltdown

AN ADORABLE video of a dog being trained to perform a perfect Irish jig has taken the social media world by storm.

The footage of the nimble-pawed pet pooch went viral on Twitter over the weekend after being posted on the platform by Rex Chapman.

“This dog is actually doing a traditional Irish dance with his hooman...” Chapman wrote alongside the tweet.

In the video, a red-headed woman takes her doting dog through a series of simple yet effective Irish dance steps.

Make no mistake: this is one clever canine, with the woman’s furry four-legged friend following the moves carefully, closely and copying them to a tee.

The clip has since gone global, amassing more than 8,500 retweets and 55,000 likes.

It’s even captured the attentions of a Hollywood star with Ben Stiller among those to comment on the clip, commending the trainer for getting her dog to perform all of the moves.

“I’m lucky if I get a reluctant paw raise for a huge piece of turkey bacon,” he wrote.

Despite the footage going viral thanks to Chapman’s tweet, the video actually belongs to an Australian woman on Instagram.

my_aussie_gal is an account attributed to Mary and her dog Secret and currently boasts 433,000 followers.

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone!,” Mary wrote alongside the video.

“Here's me and Secret doing a traditional irish jig this morning to celebrate!”

The video has already been watched more than 155,000 times and has won high praise among her followers.

“This is beyond adorable,” one follower wrote.

“I love this SO much,” another said.

An Australian Shepherd by breed, according to Mary’s Instagram bio, Secret has been “learning tricks and chasing balls” since December 31st, 2014.

That means Secret is 49, making his dance moves all the more impressive as a result.

Give that dog a biscuit.
