Varadkar apologises on comments made about leaving nationalists in the North

TAOISEACH Varadkar has apologised for any offence caused following comments he made on the Brexit border deal.

Varadkar stated earlier this week following the success of the Brexit deal, that "no Irish Government will ever again leave Northern nationalists and Northern Ireland behind."

Fianna Fáil's Micheál Martin took offence as he said it disregarded 40 years of progressive decisions made by previous governments, including those of which made by Fíanna Fáil.

Martin stressed that agreements and laws made between the period of 1985-2006 significantly kept peace in Irish politics between North and South and no previous work left either unionists or nationalists feeling excluded.

According to Independent Varadkar has apologised for his comments. He said: "I was not trying in any way to disparage or make any offensive remarks about any government of the past 20 years".

Varadkar admitted that Martin had completed “sterling work” on the issue of the North and the Brexit border deal while acting as minister for foreign affairs.
