US Congress certifies Biden election win after night of chaos

THE UNITED States Congress have certified Joe Biden as being the next US President after a night of chaos threatened the vote.

Lawmakers were in the midst of counting and confirming the Electoral College votes yesterday when hundreds of Trump supporters  broke into the Capitol and stormed the building.

All politicians-- including those who were attempting to overturn the election result, such as Ted Cruz-- were evacuated as the mob took over the building, with the National Guard deployed to reestablish peace.

Now, in the early hours of the morning, Congress has returned to the Chamber to confirm the Electoral College votes and confirm Joe Biden as the next US President.

Joe Biden has officially been confirmed as the next President of the United States after a night of violence threatened democracy in the country.

Resuming the session, Vice President Mike Pence addressed the rioters who had stormed the building, sating "To those who wreaked havoc in our Capitol today - you did not win.

"Let's get back to work."

Mr Pence, who himself deployed the National Guard against the rioters, spoke this morning and confirmed the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Lawmakers stood and clapped as Mr Pence confirmed that "Joseph R Biden Jr, of the State of Delaware has received 306 votes, and Donald J Trump of the state of Florida has received 232 votes."

The announcement confirms that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take up the position of President and Vice President of the United States, beginning on 20 January this year."

Current president Donald Trump last night refused to condemn the protesters, instead posting a video in which he told them to "go home" but repeated his unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud and told rioters "we love you".

Trump's social media accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have been temporarily removed for fears his messages could incite further violence.
