University College Cork's green campus makes it into global top 10

AN IRISH university has been named one of the world's 10 best green universities.

University College Cork (UCC) is the only Irish university on the list created by British-based architecture and design website DesignCurial.

UCC was selected after the firm surveyed thousands of universities, ranking each on innovative green architecture, technologies and initiatives.

Mark Poland, co-chair of UCC’s Green Forum, said: “Student buy-in from the outset has been pivotal to the success of UCC’s Green Campus programme. We are delighted with this news and to be ranked so high globally.”

Ranking fourth, the other universities that made it into the top five were Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, University of Copenhagen, Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University and the University of California.

UCC’s award-winning Western Gateway Building was described as 'a standout building for sustainable design'.

The building uses waste heat from computer rooms combined with a ground source heat pump to provide a combination of heating and cooling.

This is the second time this year that UCC’s sustainability has been recognised.

In January the university took second place in the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Greenmetric World University Ranking for the second year in a row.

While last December UCC was shortlisted as the only Irish representative along with 16 other companies from across Europe in the final of the European Business Awards for the Environment.
