A MAN has tragically died in an industrial accident in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.
The deceased, aged in his 40s, was working on a construction site in Lough Sheever Business Park when the incident occurred shortly after 8am this morning.
He sustained serious injuries after being struck by a steel beam while unloading a truck.
Emergency services responded and the man was rushed by ambulance to Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Both Gardaí and the Health & Safety Authority (HSA) have confirmed they are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
In a statement, a HSA spokesman said: "We were notified about an accident that took place just after 8am this morning at a construction site in Lough Sheever Business park, Mullingar.
"A man in his 40s was struck by a steel beam while it was being offloaded from a trailer.
"The man was taken to Mullingar Hospital but died as the result of his injuries. We have inspectors at the scene and an investigation is under way."
