AN IRISH woman and her husband have drowned in a swimming pool in an apparent suicide.
Jennifer Marie Boutros, 60, and her husband Peter George Boutros, 43, died in the holiday resort of Hurghada on Egypt’s Red Sea coast.
It is unclear when the tragedy happened but reports first appeared in Egypt on Friday.
According to local reports, the couple were found wearing diving suits with heavy chains wrapped around their necks.
Major General Hossam Kamal of Red Seas Security explained that the pair were discovered dead in a swimming pool in a villa owned by their friend.
Their bodies were taken to the morgue in Hurghada General Hospital.
Major General Kamal said security services initially believed Mr and Mrs Boutros had been murdered as their hands and feet were tied.
However, he added that authorities later found a video recorded by the couple admitting their desire to take their own lives.
"Sweetheart, this is our last night in this world, and tomorrow we will become angels in heaven. Our spirits are not happy on earth and deserve to live in a happy eternal life," they are reported to have said.
Local media claim that a camera installed near the swimming pool captured a complete video of the couple’s deaths.
A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said: “We are aware of the case and are providing consular assistance.”
