NORTHERN IRELAND’s newly re-elected leaders have described the latest paramilitary shooting in Belfast, as “barbaric and wrong”.
Daniel Murray, a 54-year-old delivery driver, was shot dead in his car at Lady Street in the Divis area of west Belfast shortly after 10pm on Monday.
The killing came only hours after a teenager was shot in north Belfast.
The teen was fired at a number of times in the leg, however his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A third man in his 20s was shot in an alleyway in north Belfast in the early hours of Monday.
His injuries are also not thought to be life-threatening.
In a joint statement, only days after both politicians were returned by voters to Northern Ireland’s power-sharing Executive in the Stormont Assembly, First Minister and DUP Leader, Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister, Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness said: We unreservedly condemn the actions of the perpetrators who care only for themselves.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their families, and in particular the family of Daniel Murray who was shot dead.
Mr Murray was previously been shot in the legs in 2009 and then in the face last year.
Ciara Austin, the partner of Daniel Murray, who was shot dead, speaking to UTV Ciara Austin, Mr Murray’s partner and the mother of his two-year-old son has also spoken out against those responsible, claiming he was murdered for standing up to those who had tried to intimidate him.
She also denied her partner’s involvement in drugs.
“Everybody in the community, the dogs on the street, know who’s behind it,” she told UTV.
“Someone has to stand up them because they keep getting away with it.”
“And I hope they never, ever have to go through what I’m going through.
“I just feel completely numb.”
