Theresa May confirms she won’t contest 2022 election

BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May has confirmed she won’t contest the 2022 General Election irrespective of the result of tonight’s confidence vote.

Mrs May made the announcement when addressing the 1922 Committee ahead of the secret ballot.

The Prime Minister however wants to remain in charge to deliver Brexit, despite postponing yesterday’s parliamentary vote on the deal.

There was no suggestion as to what Mrs May would do in the event of a snap election before 2022, although she has in the past ruled out calling one.

The commitment to stand down before 2022 could she her survive tonight’s vote.

Speaking today, the Prime Minister said she will contest the vote ‘with everything I’ve got’ in order to deliver a Brexit that is in everyone’s interests.

“A change of leadership in the Conservative party now will put our country’s future at risk and create uncertaintly when we can least afford it,” she said.

She added that a new leader wouldn’t have time to renegotiate a withdrawal agreement, meaning Article 50 would have to be extended or rescinded.

The result of tonight’s confidence vote is expected shortly after voting ends at 8pm.
